Job Overview

Six Square – Austin’s Black Cultural District is looking for a Bookkeeper to complement our growing team. Six Square was created to provide programming and services to preserve and celebrate the historic legacy of African American culture in Austin by preserving the cultural assets represented in the built environment, providing educational opportunities about African American history, providing opportunities for continued cultural production within Austin’s urban core and to drive economic development opportunities for Austin’s African American community.


Position Summary:

Reporting to the Office Manager, the Bookkeeper is a part-time position for a versatile individual with a minimum of two – three years of experience with nonprofit organizations. The Bookkeeper performs full charge bookkeeping services, as well as developing, identifying and implementing efficient and effective work processes to ensure the daily needs of the business as it relates to operating a 501 c (3) (non-profit) are met. These services will be done in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and internal policies and procedures as it relates to operating an independent non-profit.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following areas:

  • AA Accounting Degree (preferred) or equivalent experience (2 years bookkeeping experience)
  • Experience with Intuit QuickBooks Online
  • Experience with Intuit QuickBooks Desktop Payroll
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) accounting as well as 501 c(3) organizations


  • Prepares invoices for City of Austin (monthly) as well as, reports, memos, letters, financial statements and other documents as is needed for City of Austin reporting
  • Enter, monitor, and maintain accurate information in the Intuit QuickBooks (Software)
  • Create ad-hoc reports using word processing, spreadsheet, database, or bookkeeping software (QuickBooks)
  • Produce monthly profit and loss statements for board meetings
  • Produce monthly actual vs. projected budget reports
  • Monitors bank and credit card account balances and transactions. Keeps Executive Director up-to-date on cash flow
  • Assists with annual tax preparation/ handles reporting W-4 for contractors
  • Assists with preparation of information for financial audits
  • Communicates and works closely with the Office Manager
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Conducts research and provides information on a variety of issues pertaining to

bookkeeping activities

  • Performs other tasks as assigned


Minimum Requirements:

  • Dependable and detail oriented
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Able to multi-task and work independently
  • Able to receive training and direction via telecommunication


Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Google App’s & Gmail a plus
  • Nonprofit experience
  • College Degree


Working Conditions and Salary:

  • Small, friendly office environment.
  • Bookkeeper will work part-time between the hours of Monday-Thursday 10:00am-2:00pm (Schedule TBD)
  • Starts at 10 hours per week with the potential to work up to 15 hours per week
  • Part-time, non-exempt
  • $18.00-$22.00 per hour, depending on experience
